Presence of stones in the soil is a major obstacle in land development. A survey conducted by the Land Development Department of the French Ministry of Agriculture has indicated that some 2 million hectares of land require stone removal. Stone removal operations performed on a sample of 31,200 hectares spread over five areas have revealed that an extension of the arable areas is feasible and in certain cases, increased crop yields were noted.
Acreage gains vary between 24 and 55%. Yields have increased from 55 to more than 130%, depending on the areas.
